Contempt of court, often referred to simply as "contempt", is the offense of being disobedient to or disrespectful toward a court of law and its officers in the form of behavior that opposes or defies the authority, justice and dignity of the court.

Please tell that the Supreme Court has not accepted his contempt petition on the statement given by Prashant Bhushan in the year 2009. A three-member bench of Justices Arun Mishra and Justice BR Gavai and Justice Krishna Murari said that further contempt is needed in the contempt case. Prashant Bhushan had allegedly stated in one of his statements in 2009 that half of the former 16 Chief Justices were corrupt. Now the Supreme Court will hear the matter on August 17.

While hearing the case on August 4, the apex court had made it clear to Prashant Bhushan and Tarun Tejpal that if it did not accept their explanation or apology in the matter, it would proceed further. During the hearing, the court said that it does not want to restrict the freedom of speech and expression but there is a very subtle distinction in respect of contempt.
